VXI-11 TUTORIAL and RPC Programming Guide
The VXI-11 Specification conjures up a lot of mystery since it is a lesser known instrument specification than IEEE-488 or SCPI. A lot of people think that it deals exclusively with VXIbus Systems which is not true. However, with the increasing use of instruments with Ethernet interfaces, knowledge about the VXI-11 Specification is becoming more important. This Application Note describes the specification and shows the user how to use it to control instruments.
THE VXI-11 SPECIFICATION
The VXI-11 Specification was part of a suite of specifications developed in the early 1990s when the VXIbus concept was created. VXI-11describeshowinstrumentsorotherdevicescanbeconnected to industry-standard TCP/IP networks. The communications and programming paradigms supported by the VXI-11 specification are similar in nature to the techniques supported by IEEE-488.1 and IEEE 488.2. The protocol described allows ASCII-based communications to take place between a controller and a device over a computer network.
